Jake and Emerson were still in celebration mode when they walked to school on Monday. At the main entrance, the boys were greeted by a banner that read CHAMPION TURKEYS in bright letters. A crowd had formed to celebrate the return of the golden dog bowl, and every student and teacher they saw wanted to congratulate Jake and Emerson on the Turkeys’ big win.

The boys’ good moods lasted all day—until it was time for their class to check on the garden beds.

“Oh no!” Emerson exclaimed, frowning down at their raised bed. The seedlings hadn’t grown at all! In fact, they looked shriveled and sickly, drooping in the dirt.

Jake stared at the garden in dismay. “What happened?” he asked.

“I don’t know! They look dead! Are they all dying?” Emerson replied.

“I wish Mr. Chavez was here,” Jake said. “He’d know what’s wrong with them.”

“Poor plants,” Emerson said. “I can’t believe I feel this sad about it. They’re just plants. But they look so pitiful.”

They flagged down Ms. Turner to take a look. Even she was surprised by the appearance of the seedlings.

“Have you been watering them?” she asked.

“Every other day,” Emerson told her. “But … not over the weekend. With the game and everything …”

“That’s okay,” she said. “Two days without water wouldn’t cause this. I can’t imagine what happened to them. The leaves almost look burned.”

“What should we do?” Jake asked.

Ms. Turner thought about it for a moment. “Give them a really good watering,” she suggested. “Make sure the soil is wet throughout, just in case the water hasn’t been reaching the roots.”

“Then what?” Emerson said.

“Then we wait and see,” she replied. “Maybe they’ll bounce back.”

“But what if they don’t?” Jake asked.

“Well, you might have to start over,” Ms. Turner said. “Hopefully it won’t come to that.”

“Here, Jake,” Clara said. “Do you and Emerson want to use our watering can?”

“Thanks,” Jake replied. As he grabbed the can, he realized that Aiden was watching him. He had the same look on his face that Jake had seen so many times before—a mix of meanness and satisfaction—and now something else, too.

Happiness.

And that’s when the thought struck Jake, as shocking and unexpected as a bolt of lightning in a cloudless sky: What if Aiden had done something to their garden?
